Sorensen’s Everton relishing underdog status after stealing Emirates draw

Brian Sorensen believes that his Everton side are enjoying the underdog role after pulling off an against-the-odds draw at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

Playing away from home in front of a crowd of over 25,000, Everton were undaunted. Their attitude, in fact, was quite the opposite, as they enforced a suffocating high press and forced Arsenal into plenty of frustrating mistakes.

Speaking at full time, Sorensen said that his team have always enjoyed playing an underdog role in such matches.

He said: “Arsenal’s squad is unreal in comparison to ours, but all the money in the world doesn’t matter. It is out on the pitch that it has to be settled and that was my message to the girls.

“Our record on big stages is quite good, we have never lost.

“We do everything we can, my staff is working extremely hard to get the girls ready, and the girls are tough and resilient. It is just that togetherness that we speak about that we need to have, especially given the situation we are in.”

The situation he refers to is the Toffees’ subpar start to the season, which has seen them go winless in two opening matches, also sustaining two ACL injuries to Inma Gabarro and Aurora Galli.

Despite that, today’s result proved Everton’s ability to overcome. In Sorenson’s eyes, though, that quality has long been clear in the team.

Asked whether his team could go anywhere and get points after today, he said: “Yeah, but we had that [mindset] before we came here, but of course this reemphasizes that we can have that confidence.

“We have to capitalise on the few chances we get because we don’t get many, because we are not that good of a team that we can keep teams down and create a lot of opportunities.

“We have to find the right moments, I think we have done that today, we are always dangerous from corners. That is what you can expect playing against a team like Arsenal.”

Everton’s season continues next Sunday, hosting West Ham on Merseyside.
