Ange Postecoglou has hailed new signing Mathys Tel as “a perfect fit” for Tottenham ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg clash against Liverpool.

The Frenchman has signed for Spurs on loan from Bayern Munich along with a £45 million option to buy the striker.

Spurs head to Anfield with a one-goal advantage after a late Lucas Bergvall goal in the first leg and will be hoping their new signing can help them over the line.

Postecoglou said: “I had a conversation with him purely around the football and I think he’ll find a great place here in terms of where he is in his career. We’ve shown irrespective of age, he’ll get an opportunity and the way we play will suit him and what we have in the next few months and beyond, it’s a perfect fit.

“It’s right that it (his move) took as long as it did so he’s comfortable with it. That he took so much time and was diligent, and made the decision when he had options, it meant the right mentality, right player, he’s ambitious, with self belief and self confidence and feels he can reach the very top.

“People need to understand we’re talking about a 19-year-old player with a major decision, it’s not so much about rejecting us or anyone. He wanted to be comfortable with the decision. He didn’t want to be pushed in a certain direction, credit to him.”

Postecoglou explained he sees Tel playing across the frontline, with the France U21 international being comfortable on the wing but also as a number nine.

The Australian also revealed that recent arrival Kevin Danso is being lined up for his debut against the Reds after sealing a loan move from Lens, but the Spurs boss has not decided if it will be from the start or the bench.

With Spurs one game away from the Carabao Cup final, Postecoglou outlined his plan to make it to Wembley.

He said: “The first game against Liverpool here (is the blueprint), we created the better chances. We were really controlled in our football. We were always a threat.

“My philosophy is to win games of football. If people haven’t understood that in 26 years nothing will change their minds now.

“We need to embrace the challenge in front of us. Everyone knows the consequences of the game. Their crowd will give them a great deal of energy.

“Our preparations are a bit different. The fundamentals won’t change but how we go about it will be different. If you want to be successful these are the games you want to be involved in.”
