Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has asked the club to sell him this summer in an unexpected interview.

Speaking after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria in their second group stage match of the World Cup, the 26-year-old confirmed to ESPN Argentina that he is now looking for a new challenge.

“I spoke with people at the club [Atlético], with those I had to speak with, and the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” he admitted.

“I have to be honest, and I spoke with the people at the club, the ones I needed to speak with.”

Alvarez had be subject to a €150 million bid from Atleti’s city rivals Real Madrid earlier this month, with Spanish champions Barcelona also in the running for the forward.

Atleti had said in a statement to Diario AS that they will not sanction a transfer to Barcelona for Alvarez unless his €500 million release clause is paid.

“There is no amount of money for which Barcelona can buy Julian Alvarez. He will not be transferred to Barcelona. Either they pay the release clause for €500m (£431m) or there is no deal.”

Arsenal have also been heavily linked to the former Manchester City star.
