Antony must ‘earn the right’ to play for Man Utd says ten Hag

Erik ten Hag has warned Antony that he must “earn the right” to play for his Man Utd team.

The Brazilian winger joined the Red Devils for £86m from Ajax two years ago but has played just one minute of Premier League football in the opening four games of the season.

United take on Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and asked about Antony ahead of the game, ten Hag said: “We will see what the lineup will be.

“We have training every day and the players have to earn the right. When the attitude is good and they show performances in training then they will play.”

Trio Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Mathjis de Ligt were forced off in the win over Southampton on Saturday but ten Hag says he hopes to have all three available against Barnsley.

The United boss also provided an update on Luke Shaw, who has missed the start of the season through injury: “He is progressing well.

“Of course we have a plan in our head when he can be ready but you’re always dependent on how the progress will go and you can’t make a suggestion because there are so many factors. A plan can accelerate or slow down.”
