Arsenal agree deal for top target, Aston Villa eye Sterling – latest transfer news

Arsenal have agreed a deal in principle to sign midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, according to reports.

Sky Sports say the total fee is £32.67m and that the 28-year-old has agreed on a four-year deal with the Gunners.

The Times say Aston Villa have opened talks with Chelsea about signing Raheem Sterling, who has been told he has no future at the Blues.

Nottingham Forest are in advanced talks with Arsenal over the signing of forward Eddie Nketiah and Southampton are preparing to make a loan bid for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, Sky Sports say.

Newcastle United’s protracted pursuit of Marc Guehi may be approaching fruition, as Sky Sports report that a deal could be completed by the weekend.

The Magpies have been negotiating the deal for several weeks, with Crystal Palace’s valuation of £65m a key point of contention. Newcastle appear ready to meet that valuation, though, in what will be a club record fee.

Guehi made 25 appearances for Crystal Palace last season and was a key member of Gareth Southgate’s England setup at Euro 2024. Should his move to the north east fall through, Newcastle are reportedly considering Chelsea’s Axel Disasi and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba as alternatives.

The Athletic report that Kieran Trippier is unsettled at Newcastle after falling below Tino Livramento in the right-back pecking order. He hopes to move by the end of the transfer window, with Everton interested in taking the 33-year-old on loan.

Liverpool are close to completing a first signing of the Arne Slot era as Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili prepares to join from Valencia, where he will remain on loan for the 2024/25 season.

Fulham are set to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Joachim Andersen for a reported £30m as they look to replace the veteran Tim Ream, who joined Charlotte FC earlier this summer.

The Guardian say Manchester United are looking to offload unwanted talent, with Christian Eriksen set to depart. Dutch side Anderlecht are interested in signing the 32-year-old

Ipswich Town are set to announce the loan signing of Chelsea striker Armando Broja. The deal contains an obligation to buy, but it will only be effective if Ipswich survive relegation.

Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour, who made 41 appearances in all competitions last season, is set for a move to Napoli, having agreed personal terms with the Italian club according to various reports. The move is expected to be completed early next week.

And Brentford have announced the signing of defender Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool on a five-year deal.
