Arsenal have confirmed the signing of defender Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen, who joins on an initial loan deal with the club also having the option to buy him for £45m.

Hincapie has played 116 games for Leverkusen, helping the club to win a league and cup double in the 2023-24 campaign.

He provides more defensive cover for boss Mikel Arteta, with Poland international Jakub having joined Porto on loan, who also have the option to purchase him.

“We are so pleased to welcome Piero Hincapie to the club,” manager Mikel Arteta said.

“Piero has a real physical presence, with his versatility and tactical flexibility giving us strong added defensive options. He is a big character, with a very good combination of both youth and maturity. He will make our squad stronger and more competitive as we continue into this season.

“We welcome Piero and his family to Arsenal.”

Midfielder Fabio Vieira has departed for Hamburg, where he will spend the season on loan.

He follows Albert Sambi Lokonga to the club, who earlier completed a permanent move to the Bundesliga side.
