Arteta on Arsenal’s Champions League hopes: ‘A lot of things need to go your way’

Mikel Arteta thinks Arsenal winning the Champions League might be a more difficult achievement than the Premier League.

The Gunners are on the cusp of confirming their place in the knock-out stages of the Champions League in their first season back in the competition for six years, and face Lens at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Arsenal led the way at the top of the Premier League for the majority of last season before being overtaken by Manchester City late on, but despite the difficulty of getting over the line, Arteta says the Champions League will be even more difficult to win.

“Now I think to win the Premier League is so tough. For us as a club, I think it’s the Champions League because we haven’t won it, that’s it,” Arteta explained when asked which is more difficult.

“A lot of things have to go your way. You have to obviously perform at an incredible level to have the opportunity to do that and we are going to try that’s for sure.

“To win the Premier League, it’s a huge marathon, but the Champions League is something special.

“It’s moments that have to go your way, and that belief that the team can win it, to create that special atmosphere in these moments, to have the luck in those moments, it’s a lot of things that you need to go your way.”
