Arteta praises ‘relentlessness and attitude’ of Arsenal players for response to recent red cards

William Saliba is sent off against Bournemouth

Mikel Arteta says his Arsenal players will be “galvanised” by their recent run of red cards which have led to the team dropping points.

The Gunners have been down to ten men three times this season following William Saliba’s red card in the defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Arsenal have also dropped points against Brighton and Man City due to red cards for Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard respectively this season.

And while Arteta knows his players must improve their discipline, he believes his squad are motivated to make up for it.

“They’re absolutely galvanised and they showed their teeth and they fight against the situation,” he said.

“But we understand as well that the margins of being successful and earning the results that we want minimises and obviously we need to change that.

“The relentlessness and attitude of the team is remarkable. I told them yesterday, the way we played with ten men in those conditions, what you have to go through emotionally, coming back from internationals again, is incredible.”

And asked about the best way to stop his side getting red cards, Arteta added: “The most effective way, I have to be very honest, not talking about it.

“I don’t know if it’s the right way or not but that’s what happened and that’s the reality.”
