Maresca on Chelsea star's struggles and draw with Brentford

Read more from Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on Nkunku’s struggles, the draw with Brentford and why he made changes for the game here…

Maresca admits Chelsea star is ‘struggling’ and explains why he made changes in draw with Brentford

Maresca backs Nkunku

Maresca denies Nkunku’s struggles are because of a “lack of effort” and says he is working hard to improve.

Maresca not worried about goalscoring

“I do not have the feeling this team needs to score more goals. For sure, we want more goals from the players up front, but I don’t think it’s a problem. We are top three, top four in terms of scoring goals.”

Chelsea's away struggles

Maresca on his side’s recent struggles away from home: “I think we started the season winning many games away and we struggled at home. Now it is the other way. To get top four or top five, fight for the title, you need the right balance.”

Maresca explains decision to make changes

“The reason why is we played Thursday night and not all of them were 100%. The idea was to start in one way and finish another way. The plan almost worked.”

Maresca says Chelsea did enough to deserve the win

Reaction from Enzo Maresca: “We did enough to win. We shot over 20 times. The only thing we missed was the goal but I’m happy with the performance.”

90'
Full-time (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

A disappointing performance from Chelsea, and a disappointing result to go with it.

The Blues are fourth in the league, but Manchester City can go above them with a win later today.

A good opportunity remains to be in the Champions League next season, but the players have to step up and not waste the few games they have left to secure it.

The Bees came closer to scoring, and Thomas Frank will be pleased with the desire his team showed.

Brentford turning up the intensity (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Brentford have had a couple of very good chances in quick succession now. Wissa has the latest, heading just wide from a Damsgaard cross

Mbeumo comes close! (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Mbeumo makes a run from deep in his own half, plays a one-two with Wissa, and lets off an effort that forces Sanchez into a good save

Change for Chelsea (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Cucurella comes on for James

Enzo shoots over (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

It seems we’ve come to that point in the game when anyone will try a shot from anywhere.

Fernandez has just blazed an effort about 15 metres over the bar

65'
Neto, Jackson and Palmer have made Chelsea twice as dangerous (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

It seems obvious that bringing on some of your best players would have an impact, and it has.

Neto in particular looks very lively and up for this. Chelsea knocking on the door now

61'
Neto with an instant impact (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

From nothing, Neto was laid off just outside the box and tried an ambitious curled effort which forced a save from Mark Flekken.

Palmer and Neto on for Dewsbury Hall and Madueke

Chance (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Jackson’s searching ball came off Sepp van den Berg and then off Mark Flekken. That was dangerously close to going in

Maresca makes a change (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Well Maresca hasn’t even waited to see if his side will improve in the second period before making a change.

Who can blame him?

Jackson on for Nkunku (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Jackson on for Nkunku

45'
Half-time (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Half-time and this game has been fairly uninspiring.

Mikel Damsgaard has come close on a couple of occasions and perhaps should have scored. Chelsea have had no real chances of not and Enzo Maresca may feel he needs to make some changes.

They have a lot of firepower on the bench

It's been very poor from Chelsea so far (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Almost half-time and this has been a dull affair.

Chelsea’s weak line-up is showing and Brentford have certainly come closer to breaking the deadlock

35'
Brentford fans chanting 'Boring, boring Chelsea' (Brentford 0-0 Chelsea)

Brentford fans are taunting Chelsea now, chanting ‘Boring, boring Chelsea’

Chelsea finally have a tame shot via Nkunku, and the away fans sing ‘We’ve had a shot’

32'
Mbeumo comes close

Another chance for Brentford, and this time it’s Mbeumo. Reece James tried to clear the ball, hit it straight at Mbeumo, who comes in off the right and gets a shot off quickly that had Sanchez scrambling

28'
Another brilliant opportunity for Damsgaard

Straight after the free kick, Chelsea give the ball away, and Wissa plays in a lovely chipped through ball to Damsgaard inside the box. He controlled it well, but scuffed the finish and fell over.
