Chelsea confirm appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager

Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four year contract.

The Spaniard will replace the interim manager Calum McFarlane on the 1st of July with the current Chelsea boss taking over the final two games of the season against Tottenham and Sunderland.

Just under a month after Liam Rosenior was sacked Chelsea finally have their man.

Alonso boasts an illustrius record as a player and a manager winning the Champions League twice (with Liverpool and Real Madrid) as a player and completing an unbeaten domestic double as manager of Bayer Leverkusen.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football,” Alonso said upon taking the job. “It fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
