Chelsea draw against Inter in final pre-season friendly: Five things we learned

Chelsea drew 1-1 with Inter Milan in their final pre-season game ahead of the new season in what was Enzo Maresca’s first game at Stamford Bridge.

Marcus Thuram opened the scoring for Inter before substitute Lesley Ugochukwu struck late on to level matters.

Here is five things we learned…

Marc Cucurella is looking sharp

Cucurella had an indifferent campaign last year and many fans had doubts over whether he is good enough to help take Chelsea forward. He was, however, brilliant at the Euros and helped Spain win the competition. It seems his confidence is at an all-time high sand he was impressive today, both offensively and defensively.

Romeo Lavia showed his importance

Lavia was injured for the majority of last season and did not have the chance to make an impact. He has, though, been an important player for Maresca in pre-season and his inclusion in the team provides more balance in midfield and Chelsea look a better side for it. Keeping him fit will be a big boost.

Marcus Thuram looks set for another good season

Thuram was Inter’s most threatening player and constantly hassled the Chelsea backline. It was therefore no surprise when he scored in the 26th minute with a lovely rifled shot into the top-right corner. Throughout the game his touches and lay-offs were effective and he will be hoping to improve on the 20 goals and assists he registered in Serie A last year.

Marc Guiu has the makings of a top striker

Guiu has featured a lot in pre-season and has shown promise. Standing at six feet and two inches tall at just 18-years-old, he is an imposing figure and knows how to use his physicality. His link-up play is strong and he has the raw attributes and potential to be an excellent forward. It will be interesting to see whether Chelsea keep him at the club this season or decide to loan him out.

Chelsea may have a slow start to the season

Throughout pre-season Chelsea have had mixed performances and Maresca has already spoken about needing to change the players’ mindsets with regards to last season and the system they were used to playing. Again, today, some of the players lacked sharpness and didn’t seem on the same wavelength. Maresca may need patience with this squad, and more importantly, so will the fans.
