Live updates from Stamford Bridge as Chelsea host Jose Mourinho’s Benfica in the Champions League.
Well that was massively underwhelming, in honesty.
This game was given the big build-up, and rightly so, but it failed to deliver. Not that Enzo Maresca will care. Chelsea were in somewhat of a mini-crisis and this win has done a bit to ease some of the tension.
The Blues were not great but they haven’t been all season. They have registered their first Champions League points and that is what matters.
Jose Mourinho was serenaded by the home fans on three separate occasions and was very appreciative. He will ultimately be disappointed, however, that his side failed to get the job done.
Joao Pedro has been sent off with less than a minute to go for a bizarre second yellow card that seemed harsh.
Six minutes have been added on. Can Chelsea hold on for their second win in six games, or will Benfica pull it back?
Araujo on for Aursnes
There’s less than ten minutes to go and it seems Mourinho has finally instructed his players to step things up a notch.
They are playing with more urgency and looking to force the issue.
James and Acheampong on
Gusto and Badiashile off.
Ivanovic, Barreiro, Schjelderup on
Sudakov, Lukebakio, Rios off.
The second half has been uneventful so far. Chelsea are quite happy to sit on their lead and recycle possession whilst Benfica have not yet thrown the kitchen sink at the game.
Fredrik Aursnes is booked for taking out Moises Caicedo.
Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens come on for Tyrique George and Alejandro Garnacho.
He’s only been on the pitch for four minutes but the young Brazilian is already getting fans excited.
Benfica had a corner which was cleared high into the sky, and Estevao somehow brought it down and under his control before setting the Blues away on a counter-attack. He certainly is an exciting talent.
Estevao is coming on for Buonanotte.
Rios gets his name in the book after a cynical challenge on Buonanotte.
Chelsea kick-off the second half, and there’s an early yellow card for Buonanotte.
It’s not been a classic so far. The game started quickly but Chelsea scored early and have not been troubled too much since.
They have missed a couple of good chances themselves. Enzo Fernandez was shown a yellow card just before the end of the half.
Jose Mourinho has been getting progressively unhappier and is up to his usual antics on the touchline.
A flurry of good chances for Chelsea. Marc Cucurella found space near the left byline and fed George in the box, but the young forward could only aim straight at Trubin.
Chelsea may rue these misses.
Pedro Neto takes a free kick from outside the box on the left flank and aims it into the middle of the six-yard box. Badiashile met it unmarked but inexplicably couldn’t head on target.
Fernandez goes to take a corner but is hurled abuse and targeted with objects thrown from the travelling Benfica fans.
Jose Mourinho asks the fans to clam down and Fernandez was finally able to take the corner.
Benfica are chasing the game and making mistakes. Four or five times they have given the ball away without pressure. Mourinho seems to be getting frustrated.
Alejandro Garnacho has had a positive start to the game. He is being fed the ball a lot and looks confident to take on Amar Dedic 1 vs 1.
It’s been a hasty start to the game and Chelsea have made a few mistakes early on. They can now ease into it and take a bit more time.
Chelsea score via an own goal! Pedro Neto crosses from deep into Garnacho, who does well to stick a leg out and put it across the box. Richard Rios is the unfortunate Benfica player who diverts it into his own goal.
Benfica have already had moments of danger here at Stamford Bridge. They find a chance to break before the ball reaches Sudakov on the left. He takes a tame shot that goes wide of the post.
Chelsea have started cautiously. Pedro Neto crosses into the box and it reaches Garnacho who takes a touch before dragging wide.
Cucurella give it away to Lukebakio inside the Chelsea half. He drives at goal and forces a Benfica corner
