A well-deserved win for Chelsea in the end. They created a lot of openings, and were dangerous throughout. It is a vital win in the race for UCL football, and they will now feel buoyed for the other tough games they have yet to come.
Liverpool competed well, especially considering they won the league only last week and could easily have had their minds elsewhere, but there was no hint of that.
After 18 long games, Cole Palmer has finally scored. And you can see just how much it means to him.
Chelsea won a penalty on the stroke of the final whistle, and no one other than Palmer was ever going to take it. He dispatched cooly to seal the win
Liverpool are running out of time, and Chelsea are closing in on the win. But there is still four minutes to be played
Well that makes the last 10 minutes interesting. Liverpool have a corner from the right, which is well-delivered by Mac Allister, and headed in strongly and accurately by Van Dijk
He may be 19 games without a goal, but he hasn’t come much closer to breaking that streak than just now. Palmer gets the ball on the left, dribbles into the box, and whether he attempted to shoot or cross we will never know, but the ball rebounded off the post. Chelsea knocking
Madueke goes through on goal, cuts in and hits a defender, before Enzo then plays in Neto who is denied at close range by Alisson
As you’d expect at 2-0 down, Liverpool have begun to throw caution to the wind and are getting more men forward, but they are being left susceptible to counter attacks, and at the minute you feel if a third is to come, it will be for Chelsea
If the last one was a good chance, this was a golden one. Salah whips in a ball this time for the right, and Nunez meets it perfectly. Unfortunately for him it was well, well wide
Nunez has perhaps what has been Liverpool’s best chance of the game. Gakpo puts in a great cross from the left which finds Nunez, and the Uruguayan connects with his torso, but the ball flies just wide
They’ve already won the title, and essentially they now have nothing to play for. At 2-0 down, will the players be able to find a comeback within them?
A second, and perhaps vital goal for Chelsea. Palmer drifted to the byline and put in a dangerous cross, but what happened from there was an alright mix-up. The ball got lost in a crowd of players, and when Van Dijk went to boot it away, he could only hit Quansah a year in front of him, and the ball bundled into the goal
A good half of football comes to an end. Chelsea will be happy with the scoreline, and have been threatening the goal at regular intervals. Liverpool have had a lot of the ball without being too dangerous with it.
The game has fallen into a lull, but Neto just sparked some life into it. A nice move out from the back saw the ball fall to Palmer, who played a lovely ball into Neto. The Portuguese took a lovely touch, and cut inside before letting fly. Just past the post
Any talk of Liverpool not taking this game seriously was wide of the mark. Even heavily rotated, Slot’s men are here to compete. And they have not made it easy for the hosts
Once again it’s the imperious Noni Madueke creating the danger for Chelsea. He wriggled past three players before crossing it in, and it took a nick off Quansah before going just past the post
The pressure from Liverpool at the minute is relentless. The Blues already look like they need half time whilst Liverpool are doing all they can for the equaliser.
All the noise at the moment is from the travelling Scousers
Liverpool have started to take a hold of this game and are now controlling possession. Chelsea are struggling to make it out of their own half, but they are containing Arne Slot’s men currently
The Englishman has been in fine form of late, and he looks to be continuing it here today. He’s just dribbled past four Liverpool players
The game started quickly with the goal, and has continued in the same manner. The two sides are going blow for blow. Famous last words but this game feels like it has goals in it
Jackson was clean through on goal and wiped out by the Liverpool keeper, fortunately for him it was offside. The Brazilian would have seen red otherwise
Enzo Fernandez has broken the deadlock already! It’s a dream start for Chelsea. Neto ran down the right win, fizzed a ball into the box which found Fernandez in space. The Argentinian had time to control it before placing it into the bottom right corner of the goal
The game is about to get underway, and the atmosphere is building nicely here at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea fans will be hoping the team is up for it today
Enzo Maresca knows that nothing less than three points will do for his side in the fight for the Champions League football. He’ll be hoping Liverpool have been enjoying the fruits (or drinks!) of their success
Arne Slot said he would be making big changes to his XI and he was not lying. Now the impetus is really on Chelsea. Endo and Elliott are making their FIRST PL starts of the season
Alisson, Endo, Van Dijk, Salah, Jones, Gakpo, Elliott, Jota, Tsimikas, Alexander-Arnold, Quansah
