De Zerbi explains why Spurs have spent big to sign Savio

Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi believes new signing Savio has the potential to become one of the best wingers in the world.

Savio has joined Spurs from Manchester City in a deal worth £75m plus £10m in potential add-ons and De Zerbi believes his ability in one-on-one situations can add a new dimension to his attack.

“I think if you analyse the last season, as attackers, in attacking positions, we need players capable to win one-to-one, to create something, to create a chance to score,” De Zerbi said.

“In terms of one-to-one, he’s one of the best players.

“He can play on the right side, on the left side. I know him from a long time, since Brighton, and I spoke with him before he went to City. He’s a big player for us.”

However, De Zerbi believes Savio must become more clinical in front of goal if he is to reach the highest level.

“For sure there’s an improvement he has to achieve,” he added.

“If you analyse the other best wingers in the world, many of them score 10-15 goals per season.

“He has the qualities, maybe his habits, he has to change his habits, because he has to be focused on the assistance, on the one-to-one dribbling, and also to score.

“Because we have to increase the number of chances to score and the number of goals,” he said.

“You become a top team scoring more goals.”
