Live updates from Wembley as England face World Cup winners Spain.
“That’s why I was surprised about the World Cup because I think, at the World Cup, we beat three top ten teams. Interesting that in the moment where we win, nobody brings it up, but when we lose one we come up with statistics.
“I think we did everything today to beat Spain. Details matter on this kind of level.
“The amount of mistakes, clear cut mistakes, was too high on our side today unfortunately and in the last 20 metres they were more composed and more clinical.
“Still, we had them and we had the chance to beat them. We will keep on pushing this team. We proved at the World Cup that we are capable of doing it in tournaments.
“Today we cannot prove it with the result but I think the way we played was enough to beat them but it’s not proven in the result.”
“Lewis Hall missed some training sessions with a bit of an injury scare so that’s why I was a bit hesitant to put him out there today but he’s an option. He trained well at the end of the week but he was out of training at the beginning of the week and we just didn’t want to take any risk because there was a lot of high speed running and defending to do.
“Lewis is always in our discussions at the left-back position, he’s the one who actually plays left-back for his club. Myles and Rico play many times in central midfield.”
“Not for me but I can imagine maybe for the Manchester City players.
“I will not comment on that. I think it’s an ongoing court case so I won’t comment on that.
“I didn’t make it a topic. It was no topic for me. I hear news the latest in camp, I feel all the time, so just thinking about Spain and training and meetings. Not for me.
“For the players, they have more time than me, so for sure I can imagine that they talk about it but it’s good that they do and I didn’t feel them distracted.”
England boss Thomas Tuchel: “It was the worst possible start. The reaction was okay but it impacted our confidence.
“We grew into the game, we played more and more in their half, we had an incredible number throughout the game, but especially in the first half, of high ball wins, played very brave against the ball, pushed them back and got better and better with the ball.
“Throughout the match I think the difference was that they were more clinical and more composed in the last 20 metres.
“The second half was one of the best 15 or 20 minute so far from us, a total, complete performance. We couldn’t score the third and I think it would have been the decisive punch.”
He adds that England need to “reduce the mistakes”.
England captain Harry Kane: “I spoke before that we reached good levels at the World Cup but didn’t quite put a full 90 minutes together. Probably similar again today. We had a couple of good moments though, that period was as good as we’ve played in a long, long time and that’s the standard we know we can reach.”
Anthony Gordon: “They’re the best in the world for a reason. When it went to 3-2 you see their ability to really control possession. I think against someone like that you have really got to go for the throat which we did. The penalty was a massive momentum shift. We just lost to the best in the world. The gap is not big in my mind and I think tonight proved that. We just need to not make mistakes at the highest level.”
England were 2-1 up with a penalty to make it three, but after Kane squandered the opportunity, Spain came firing back to win the game.

Alex Baena gets Spain’s second.
He shoots from just outside the area after O’Reilly gave the ball away in his own half and it flies into the corner.
Yamal has to score.
Two Ballon d’Or contenders, two huge missed chances.
Yamal only has the keeper to beat inside the six yard box, but fires wide.

The ball comes out to him on the right and he smashes the ball in on goal, but Cucurella’s face is in the way. That has got to hurt.
