Fan Vote: Who is the greatest Premier League striker?

Plenty of world-class strikers who have graced the Premier League over the last 32 years, with some scoring ridiculous amounts of goals.

We wanted to know who was the greatest ever to play in the English top-flight, so we turned to our followers on YouTube to get an answer. Over 14 thousand responded to our poll, and now it is time to reveal the results from first to fifth.

1. Thierry Henry – 63 per cent

The overriding winner of the poll was Arsenal’s all-time top goalscorer Thierry Henry. The Frenchman wowed Gunners supporters with not just his goals, but his skills, demeanour and athletic capabilities. Henry notched up 175 goals as well as 75 assists for Arsene Wenger’s side, enjoying a fruitful eight and a half years in north London. Despite only being seventh in the Premier League all-time scoring list, the Frenchman clearly left a lasting impression on fans.

2. Alan Shearer – 18 per cent

Ranked second in this list, Alan Shearer is the all-time top goalscorer in Premier League history. Four years with Blackburn Rovers followed by a further ten with Newcastle United reach a total of 260 goals, a number that is yet to be matched by any other player in the league. Alongside his record tally of goals, Shearer also contributed 68 assists, making it 328 goal contributions in 441 games. The Geordie’s record looks set to remain, with Mohamed Salah being the closest current player to his record, but still 101 goals behind.

3. Wayne Rooney – 9 per cent

Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer Wayne Rooney ranks third with our followers with just nine per cent. Rooney scored 208 goals for Everton and United, and is third in the Premier League standings, behind Shearer and Harry Kane. The former England captain played the majority of his top flight career as a forward, before transitioning into a midfield role later down the line. He also assisted 108 times, taking his overall tally to 316 goal contributions in 491 games.

4. Harry Kane – 6 per cent

Harry Kane played his entire top flight career in the Premier League with Tottenham until last season when the England captain secured a transfer to German Champions Bayern Munich. This brought an end to his pursuit of Shearer’s goalscoring record, completing his Premier League adventure with 213 goals, only 47 away from the record. Kane also achieved 47 assists, taking his overall tally to 260 goal contributions in just 320 games.

5. Other – 5 per cent

Whilst we know there are plenty more strikers we could have added to our poll, we wanted to hear the opinions of the fans on who else they thought should be on the list. Honourable shouts go to Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero, who is fifth in the all-time list with 184 goals, just shy of former Manchester United striker Andy Cole, who scored 187 times for seven different sides. Leicester City great Jamie Vardy scored on his Premier League return and was also mentioned by fans, alongside Erling Haaland, who at his current rate looks set to obliterate every record in his way.
