Fishcake protest: Fans in Norway get game abandoned after VAR opposition

A match in Norway was abandoned after fans threw fishcakes on the pitch in a protest against the use of VAR.

The top-flight game between Rosenborg and Lillestrom was called off by the referee after half an hour when fans threw fishcakes, tennis balls, and flares onto the pitch.

The two teams were forced off twice but came back out onto the pitch to try and complete the game before the match was abandoned as Lillestrom fans continued to protest with tennis balls and flares and were joined by the home fans.

Despite being warned to stop, they refused to do so which resulted in the game being abandoned.

They also held up a banner which read “We never give up. VAR is going away” with Lillestrom fans chanting “Hate, hate, hate damn VAR” as players left the pitch.

Lillestrom boss Andreas Georgson also appeared to support the protests: “It is almost historic. When you are not listened to, civil disobedience is the last resort.”

But Rosenborg gaffer Alfred Johansson was less pleased: “It’s an annoying feeling, we are all here to play, we are not allowed to do that.

“We understand they have their point of view and attitudes, but we are upset we didn’t get to play.”

This is not the first protest seen in Norway and Scandinavia over the use of VAR.

Last year, fan groups in the country organised an anti-VAR demonstration while Sweden became the first country to reject introducing VAR in May following opposition from fans.
