De Bruyne reaction to being subbed off ‘not a problem’ says Guardiola

Pep Guardiola said that Kevin De Bruyne’s reaction after being subbed off in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool is not a problem.

De Bruyne’s withdrawal past the hour mark highlighted Liverpool’s dominance in the second half as Guardiola looked to shore up the midfield by bringing on Mateo Kovacic.

After Alexis Mac Allister had levelled proceedings right at the start of the second half, Liverpool grew in confidence and started to force City into some uncharacteristic errors in possession, with Luis Diaz going close to putting the hosts ahead with two golden opportunities.

The Belgian was visibly irritated after being hauled off, but Guardiola confirmed that his reaction was normal, and he has no problem with De Bruyne expressing his discontent.

Guardiola said: “That’s good (De Bruyne’s reaction). He has a chance next game to prove it. We need a player who keeps the ball. It’s not about pressing. Kovacic is really good at that. We were happy with Kevin. It’s not a problem. We’re fine.”

“We started really well but they are an incredible team. We had our moments, they had theirs. The way they play it is not easy. We take that point.

“First half we had momentum, lots of chances first half. And after we gave away the penalty, we suffered. It was a good game for the spectators.”

Guardiola also reflected on the difficulties of managing the Anfield atmosphere: “I know how difficult it is at Anfield. It is difficult at the Etihad too, Liverpool have not won there in eight years.

We prove, both sides, we are incredible competitors. I would prefer a win, but they have proved for many years the quality they have. It was good from everyone.”
