Guardiola hopeful of new deal for Gundogan as de Bruyne urges team-mate to stay

Kevin de Bruyne has urged team-mate Ilkay Gundogan to put pen to paper on a new contract with Man City after winning the FA Cup by beating rivals Man Utd.

Gundogan scored twice as City edged past United 2-1, setting up the possibility of securing the treble next week when they face Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

The German midfielder’s contract expires this summer, with Barcelona and Arsenal among the clubs said to be interested in signing him.

But team-mate de Bruyne says he is desperate for him to stay at the club beyond this summer.

“He’s been incredible for the seven years he’s been here,” de Bruyne said.

“In the big moments he steps up. He isn’t afraid and he scores great goals so I’m happy.”

And pushed on whether Gundogan should sign a new deal, he added: “Yeah, definitely. He should sign now.”

Gundogan scored after just 13 seconds at Wembley with a fine volley from outside the area, before netting another volley in the second half to put City back ahead following Bruno Fernandes’ penalty.

City will now travel to Istanbul for the Champions League final hoping to become just the second team in history to win the treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League – the other being Man Utd in 1999.

But de Bruyne says his side can face the Italian outfit without having to feel any added pressure because of the chance to do the treble.

“I don’t feel like there’s any pressure, no matter what happens we had a great season already,” he said.

“It’s been an incredible season and hopefully we can make it even better.”

The game could be Gundogan’s last for City should he opt not to sign a new deal and move on.

But Man City boss Pep Guardiola says the club, specifically director of football Txiki Begiristain, is working hard to ensure it is not.

“He (Gundogan) knows what I think,” Guardiola said.

“Maybe some of you know, but we are neighbours. Not like United, we are neighbours. We live on the same floor for many years.

“He’s a close friend of mine, he’s an exceptional player, but hopefully we can finish in a good way.

“Txiki is working so hopefully we can do it because the season he has done is just exceptional, being part of the important moments.

“This season many, many times he scored important goals.”
