Guardiola admits ‘concern’ for Stones and discusses future of Phillips

Pep Guardiola admits he was “concerned” about John Stones going to play for England over the international break having only just returned from injury.

The defender played over an hour of England’s 3-1 win over Italy as Gareth Southgate’s men qualified for Euro 2024 in Germany next summer.

Stones made his first Premier League appearance of the season off the bench in City’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal prior to the international break, and Guardiola says he was worried about the risks of playing from the start for England.

“We were a little bit concerned,” the City boss said.

“We spoke with Gareth, we have an incredible relationship. We were concerned because John didn’t play one minute in the last two months and just recovered in time for the national team.

“John has been an important figure and we could not use him. It’s perfect for us that he got minutes and rhythm but what happens if he’s injured?

“Players love to play for their countries. I never say don’t go there, but always they have to understand that if a player doesn’t play one minute with us or plays few minutes this season, he didn’t play once for the last two months, we are a little bit concerned but thankfully everything was right and he’s ready for the next games.”

Kalvin Phillips also played from the start in England’s win over Italy despite his lack of game time under Guardiola this season, and said afterwards that he would consider his future if his opportunities continued to prove limited at City.

“The transfer window is over, now we are here together,” Guardiola said on Phillips’ future.

“When it is a game like transitions or little bit of chaos, Kalvin is perfect.

“When there is something you need to do, there are still one or two players who can do it better. That’s the simple reason.

“He will be here until winter. After, I don’t know what will happen because nobody knows once the window is open.”
