Gus Poyet says he thinks Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez could equal the goalscoring numbers of Liverpool legend Luis Suarez.
Gus Poyet was speaking with hayers.com on behalf of William Hill
The former Uruguay star and current Greece manager believes Nunez can match the feat of Liverpool’s last South American superstar – a bold statement considering Suarez’s astonishing impact in the Premier League.
Nunez has seven goals and six assists in the league this season, after grabbing a brace against AFC Bournemouth in Liverpool’s 4-0 rout at the Vitality Stadium.
And Poyet believes Nunez is finally finding his feet in England after a difficult start to life at the club.

“I think this season he has started on fire. Playing so many games for Liverpool, in normal natural rotation.
“I invite people to look at when Nunez plays for the national team of Uruguay. Playing up front on his own, running into space, being the main number nine. He has been amazing, he has been outstanding.
“Also playing for a big team like Liverpool means the opposition drop. It is a different game in that process.”
Nunez joined Liverpool in the summer of 2022 and despite scoring on his league debut, had an underwhelming first season at the club.
But boss Jurgen Klopp has stuck by him and he is now a fan favourite among the supporters.
“The power, the skill – he is already a favourite at Anfield, he needs the kind of form where most of his touches, they are ending up in the back of the net”, Poyet said.
“And then he can equal (Suarez), because Suarez’s numbers for Liverpool are out of this world, they are incredible. The more he plays, the better he is going to be.”
