‘He’s going to give us a lot’ – Odegaard on new Arsenal signing Calafiori

Martin Odegaard says he has already seen that Riccardo Calafiori will make a difference to the Arsenal team team.

Calafiori completed his move to the Gunners this week from Bologna but missed the pre-season friendly defeat to Liverpool following “a very busy 48 hours”, according to boss Mikel Arteta.

But skipper Odegaard says he has seen enough to know that he will improve Arsenal.

“I think everyone saw straight away in training that he’s a top player and a top defender, physical,” said Odegaard.

“He has this presence on the pitch and I’m sure he’s going to give us a lot. So I’m happy to have him on board and looking forward to seeing more from him.”

Arsenal will now head back to London following their pre-season tour of the USA and Odegaard believes the group are in a good position, with several key players including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and David Raya joining up with the team when they return.

He said: “I think we’re not quite there yet. I think we have room for improvement still but it’s early.

“I think fitness wise we’re good, we’re just missing a little bit of sharpness and a little bit of connection but that will come with games so I’m not worried.

“We’re in a good moment, a good position, and I feel like we’re getting more and more sharp so it’s looking good but there’s a lot more to come.”
