Recent form
United head into this match off the back of a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Three goals in the second half from the hosts cancelled out Alejandro Garnacho’s equaliser in the first half. Andre Onana was dropped for this match after his two errors in the first leg against Lyon. United are winless in their last four in all competitions.
Lyon continued their good form in Ligue 1 with another win, this time beating Auxerre 3-1, with Rayan Cherki, who scored the equaliser for the French side in the 95th minute last week, scoring again. The win sees Lyon rise to fourth in the table. The French side have won seven of their last nine games in all competitions.
What’s been said?
United boss Ruben Amorim confirmed Andre Onana would return in goal after being left out the squad for the weekend: “The team is the most important thing. I’m not putting Andre in because I think Andre deserves to return to competition, I’m thinking about the game because it is really important for us.”
Lyon boss Paulo Fonseca: “I expect Manchester United’s strongest performance of the season.
“They are a big team and a big club. True, in the Premier League they are not what they were. It has been a bit different, but in the Europa League they have put in some good performances and have a lot of individual skills.
“I expect to be playing against the best United there is. It is a decisive moment for Manchester United. They will be super motivated for the match.”
