Insiders say Liverpool to swoop in for Southgate after Alonso heartache

The latest odds suggest Gareth Southgate has emerged as a potential candidate to become the next Liverpool manager following Xabi Alonso’s decision to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso was deemed as the frontrunner to be appointed Liverpool’s next manager after Jurgen Klopp’s announced his departure, but the Spaniard has no intentions of leaving the Bundesliga just yet with Bayer Leverkusen on course for a record-breaking season in the German top-flight.

As a result, the oddsmakers at no-KYC have slashed the odds for Southgate becoming the next Liverpool manager from 50/1 to 14/1. With Southgate’s England contract set to expire after Euro 2024, several top European clubs are monitoring his situation with a host of teams looking to bring in a new manager for the 2024/25 season.

Southgate has taken England to the Euro 2020 final where they fell short to Italy and has reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the last two World Cups. His stock has significantly increased since he took charge of the England national team back in 2016.

Liverpool’s hierarchy have become obsessed with their sophisticated data system, which they utilise to find the best manager suited to the team’s playing style. Southgate does not rank particularly high on that model compared to other candidates such as Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim or Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, but Southgate’s experience in the latter stages of major international tournaments will certainly attract the interest of a club like Liverpool.
