Ipswich Town CEO Mark Ashton says pop superstar Ed Sheeran, who is a fan and shareholder of the club, helped them to sign a player in the summer.
Sheeran also sponsors the front of the club’s shirt and Ashton revealed at sports business conference Soccerex that Sheeran has even lent a hand with player recruitment.
“He’s a local man, a global superstar, sponsor of the football club, now a shareholder, and now officially part of our recruitment team,” he said.
“In the summer we were trying to persuade one particular player to join the football club and he realised he was an Ed Sheeran fan. Ed jumped on a Zoom call with him at the training ground just before he stepped on stage with Taylor Swift.
“That was a key part of getting the player over the line.”
And asked if the player has been a success, Ashton added: “He’s certainly scoring a few goals!”
