‘It became clear I wasn’t in Chelsea’s plans’ – Mount opens up on move to Man Utd

Mason Mount says he wanted to move to Manchester United because he did not think he would be included in Chelsea’s future plans.

The midfielder has completed an initial £55m move to Old Trafford having been at Chelsea since he was six, progressing through the club’s academy and going on to win the Champions League with the Blues in 2021.

But, speaking to MUTV, Mount claims it was clear to him that he would not be a key player in future.

“Several months ago, I think it became clear that I wasn’t in Chelsea’s plans moving forward,” he said.

“Once I knew that United were involved, my decision was made up. A massive club, huge iconic players have played here, and I wanted to be a part of that from the beginning.

“Obviously getting in early, ready for pre-season to start, was a main objective of mine as well.”

Confirming his departure ahead of the official announcement, Mount said he was grateful for the support of the Chelsea fans “over the last 18 years”.

“I know some of you won’t be happy with my decision, but it’s what’s right for me at this moment in my career,” he said in an Instagram post.

And the 24-year-old told MUTV that the club’s history and being able to play Champions League football next season were also factors in his move.

“So many iconic players have played for this club and watching them as a youngster and being a fan of them, it’s very special to obviously now be here,” he added.

“This is what I worked a long, long time for. It’s so exciting for myself.

“I’ve had the experience of playing at Old Trafford as the away team and it’s so tough. You’re not just playing against the team, you’re playing against the fans as well.

“It’s a theatre to come and play at, you look forward to it every time. But now, obviously putting the home kit on, I can’t wait to walk out there.

“Those Champions League nights are going to be special.”
