Kalvin Phillips to consider future at Manchester City

Kalvin Phillips admits he will consider his future at Manchester City over the next few months ahead of the January transfer window as he bids to keep his place in the England side for the European Championships next summer.

The midfielder has played just 70 minutes in the Premier League so far this season but started for Gareth Southgate’s side in their 3-1 win over Italy at Wembley on Tuesday as they qualified for Euro 2024.

But the former Leeds United man admits he must get more game time between now and the end of the season if he is to play a big part for England in the tournament next year.

“He (Southgate) just says for me to keep my spot I’ve got to be playing games and that’s what I want to do. I’ve agreed with Gareth on that and I know myself that I need to be playing games.

“I need to be competing every single week and that’s something I’m going to have to make a decision on over the next few months.

“Obviously it’s massive, as a football player and especially me because I’m very competitive, I want to play football as much as possible.

“Over the last year-and-a-half I’ve not been able to do that due to injuries and etcera so obviously it’s something that I’m going to have to think about and hopefully my chance does come but if it doesn’t then I’ve got to make other decisions as well.”

Phillips played 70 minutes for England as goals from Marcus Rashford and a double for Harry Kane saw the Three Lions come from behind to beat Italy and Phillips says the team must use their double over the Euro 2020 winners in qualifying as belief that they can win the next Euros.

“If only we could have done that in the Euros final, that would have been nice,” Phillips said.

“After that final, it really hurt us. We’ve not got anything against Italy but obviously we knew we owed them a result back now and we’ve done that twice so hopefully we can continue that run.”
