Klopp confirms that Andrew Robertson’s shoulder injury will keep him ‘out for a while’

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Andy Robertson will require surgery on his shoulder injury and will be “out for a while”.

Robertson hobbled off the pitch clutching his right arm late in the first half of Scotland’s Euro 2024 qualifier vs Spain following a challenge with goalkeeper Unai Simon.

Klopp said: “I think we go towards surgery. There is little chance we could try without but talking to pretty much all experts it looks like surgery will be the best thing, particularly in the long term and that means he is out for a while.

“In my experience, you can train pretty quickly again but not football-specific so he will be out for a while.”

It is a major blow for Klopp’s side after a positive start to the campaign and now the onus will be on Kostas Tsimikas to fill the void left by the Scotsman.

Klopp went on to further discuss the options he has available to him at left-back and pointed out that there are suitable candidates in the squad other than Greek international.

He said: “It’s not just Kostas. He cannot play all the games from now on. Joe Gomez can also play the position. We have Luke Chambers and other young boys. We need options so that’s good.”

There were positive injury updates from Klopp, however, with Cody Gakpo making his return to training for the first time since sustaining that foot injury against Brighton Hove Albion before the international break.

“Gakpo trained once with the team so we will have to see how it goes for tomorrow. Bajcetic, Thiago out. Ben Doak is out, has a little muscle thing. Not available.”
