Klopp demands replay of Spurs match after shocking VAR error

Jurgen Klopp feels Liverpool’s last gasp defeat to Spurs should be replayed after an error from the VAR officials wrongfully denied Luis Diaz the opening goal.

Diaz had scored after Curtis Jones was sent off for Liverpool, but the flag was raised for offside. A communication error at Stockley Park lead to the goal being disallowed when the VAR pictures showed Diaz was clearly onside.

The audio from the VAR hub was released, further illustrating that the lack of communication resulted in a monumental error, which cost Klopp’s side.

“The audio did not change it at all, because I was not really interested in that. I saw the outcome, I saw (the) goal we scored and it did not count so I was not waiting for the audio and sitting there and hoping I find out how it could happen”, said Klopp.

“What I want to say is that is it really important, is that we deal with it in a proper way. All of the people involved, they did not do that on purpose so we should not forget that.

“Yes it was a mistake, an honest mistake. I think there would have been solutions for it. Not as the manager of Liverpool so much, more as a football person, I think the only outcome should be a replay.”

The 2-1 defeat to Spurs resulted in Liverpool’s 17 match unbeaten run in the Premier League come to an end. Joel Matip’s own goal was the final nail in the coffin after Liverpool were reduced to nine-men, goal scorer Cody Gakpo hobbled off injured and Liverpool were denied a legal goal.

Klopp added it was unlikely the game will be replayed.

“It probably will not happen. The argument against that will probably be if we open that gate then everybody will ask for it.

“I think the situation is then unprecedented, it did not happen before. I am 56 years old, I have spent 50 years in football and I am used to wrong decisions, difficult decisions and power.”
