ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI believes Argentina’s shock defeat against Saudi Arabia has put more pressure on Poland to qualify from Group C.
In a dramatic first round of matches, tournament favourites Argentina were undone by a sensational second-half display by the Saudis, before Lewandowski missed from the penalty spot as Poland failed to capitalise against Mexico.
Poland now face Saudi Arabia on Saturday knowing anything less than victory will make qualifying for the knockout stages that much harder, with Argentina to play in their final group game.
Lewandowski admits he was surprised by Argentina’s slip up and understands the importance of getting a positive result against the Saudis to keep realistic hopes of qualification alive.
Speaking to HaytersTV in the mixed zone in Qatar, he said: “Surprised? Of course.
“There is some surprise but this is the World Cup so you have to be ready for everything.
“Now we are looking forward to the next game against Saudi Arabia and for us it will be a very important game.
“We have to show everything from our side and we know that it will be a very difficult game.”
Lewandowski is still searching for his first ever World Cup goal after seeing his penalty turned away Guillermo Ochoa and now Poland face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time since 1986.
