Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar is backing his former club to beat Man City on Saturday and challenge them for the Premier League title this season.
Grobbelaar played for Liverpool between 1981 and 1994, winning six First Division titles with the club, as well as three League Cups, three FA Cups and a European Cup.
Current boss Jurgen Klopp might still have a way to go to match the feats of Grobbelaar’s Liverpool teams of the 1980s but is revered by the club’s fans for bringing silverware back to Anfield after a long trophy drought, having won the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Champions League during his tenure.
Both Liverpool and City have frequently battled it out for the Premier League title in recent seasons, and Grobelaar has been impressed with the current Reds side this campaign and is predicting that could happen again this season.
“I think we’ve got a very, very good chance of going through in the Europa League and trying to upset the apple cart in the league,” he said.
“We’ll endeavour to try and win the Europa League for sure because that will be another trophy, and then we’ll get through to the Champions League next season. I think he’ll (Klopp) want another pop at that.
“This weekend is a huge, huge game for us. It’s away from home, if someone said to me take a draw I’d take it but not (because of how) well we are playing.
“We’re playing very, very well and I think we’ll go there for the win.”
Embed from Getty ImagesKlopp has overseen a transitional period at Liverpool over the past couple of seasons, with key players from the Premier League and Champions League winning seasons including Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson all moving on.
But the German’s new-look Liverpool side including summer arrivals Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have lost just once so far this campaign and Grobbelaar lauded the job the Reds boss has done in rebuilding his team.
“I’d say he’s the best manager in the world today,” Grobbelaar said.
“They way he’s changed the game and changed the teams. Nobody gave us a hope in hell of coming through this year by changing his whole midfield.
“What’s happened? The midfield have not done anything wrong this season. We’re in a very good position, it’s just at the back where we’ve got to shut up shop.”
