McFarlane: No one thought we stood a chance

“This is not an easy job. There’s a lot of change that’s gone on. Enzo (Maresca) was incredibly successful with this group, some of them were shocked by the decision.

“The character that they’ve shown in the last two days, the character they’ve shown today. Reece, Tosin, Enzo (Fernandez), they’ve really dragged the group together because everyone thought we were coming here to lose, no one thought we stood a chance, but we knew the character and the talent in this group.”

McFarlane on when next manager could be in

“There’s a chance that the new manager could be in on Monday, that’s what I was told originally.

“Obviously it’s Sunday now, we’ve been solely focused on the game so I’m sure I’ll get more information once I’m out of this press conference.

“For all I know, the new manager will be in shortly, and I will lead the team until he’s in.”

McFarlane on what's next

“We’re training tomorrow so unless I’m told otherwise this evening, I’ll be taking that session. My sole focus has obviously been on this game.

“Until I’m told otherwise, I’ll lead the team so for this moment I’m taking the session tomorrow.

“If the new manager isn’t in (by Wednesday) and the club want me to take the Fulham game, I’m more than happy to do that as well.”

On reports linking him with the Strasbourg job if Liam Rosenior moves to Chelsea: “That’s the first I’ve heard about that. I have no idea.”

More praise for Chelsea players from McFarlane

“I think the most impressive thing is the players. 1-0 down at the Etihad, interim manager, players falling ill on the day of the game, the day before the game, all the change.

“For them to regroup and take that information on and execute it speaks volumes about the characters that we have at this club. I thought they were exceptional second half.”

McFarlane proud of Chelsea players

Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane: “It was a great experience and a great game to be involved in. I’m really proud of the players.”

Guardiola on the January transfer window

“Of course I have concerns (about the squad size). Did you see the bench today? Three players from the academy and now we will have more. So we don’t have players.”

On whether there will be signings in January: “I don’t think so but we’ll see what happens because I know Ruben is a big loss, Josko is a big loss. It’s the partnership we have done.”

More from Guardiola on defensive injuries

“Of course we have a lot. John Stones is missing for I don’t know how many months and Ruben now will be out, and Josko will be out.

“Nathan (Ake) we know cannot play regularly but at the same time it happened last season so stay strong and we’ll find a solution. The spirit will be there. If the spirit is there, we will be there.”

Guardiola on Rodri, and Gonzalez and Kovacic absences

Guardiola on Rodri: “He’s an extraordinary player. His composure, he makes us play better.

“The big question mark now is in three days we have another one against a tough opponent, if he can play or not.

“But Kovacic and Nico Gonzalez are not, I would say, ready. So we’ll see how we manage.”

Guardiola on injuries to Gvardiol and Dias

“We’ll see tomorrow. It doesn’t look good, him and Ruben, so we’ll see what happens.

“I didn’t speak to the doctor but if Ruben is out it’s because he felt something.”

Guardiola reaction

Pep Guardiola reflecting on his side’s draw: “We were extraordinary in all departments, except we could not score the second, the third or the fourth.

“In the second half they made a step up. In the first half they were a little more cautious, in the second half they had nothing to lose and in the end they found the rewards.”

James praises McFarlane

Chelsea skipper Reece James speaking to Sky Sports after the game: “Credit to the staff that stepped up. They haven’t been in this role before. To come to Manchester City away as your first first team game is difficult.

“We had to adapt fast. We came out in the second half with a slightly different plan and as the game went on, we grew more into it.”

Fulltime (1-1)

The final whistle goes and City drop points in back to back matches at the beginning of 2026. Guardiola’s side only have themselves to blame for the dropped points.

For Chelsea it is a brilliant point given the circumstances. A good enough performance and result for the Blues in a difficult moment. Now we will wait and see who is in charge for their next game.
