Live updates from Old Trafford as Manchester United host local rivals Manchester City in the Premier League.

Carrick urges Man Utd players to focus on consistency

“It needs to be a version of normal (today’s approach).

“We’re not going to have games where the emotion and the feeling that today brought, I think we all understand that, but there’s definitely levels of standards and expectations that we need to live up to from ourselves as much as anyone on the outside so I’m totally aware of that.

“Consistency is the key to any success and if you can find that then you’re on to a winner so that’s our challenge.”

Carrick hails Man Utd fans

Carrick on the fans buying into his style of play: “I hope so and I think the players certainly fed off it. The players were desperate to do well and I thought don’t be too desperate where it can cloud your judgement and decisions because you’re emotionally so invested in it.

“But I thought they got the balance so right and the supporters were incredible. I said yesterday, this can be a magical place and it does some funny things.

“Today, to get that feeling is exactly what we want. Hopefully it’s just the start and it’s something we need to build on.

“We’re not getting carried away massively but you’ve got to enjoy the feeling when you get it.”

Big praise for Maguire from Carrick

“I felt it was a game for experience and knowing what it feels like. It was a big ask for H (Maguire) and credit to him. You take it for granted, sometimes, what players do but for him to play today and come through it, it was a bit of a calculated gamble of how long he could play and could he get through it because he’s literally trained for two or three days so it just shows you what it means to him and I thought he was fantastic.

“Between him and Licha, they were so solid at the back and gave us the foundation to build on.”

Carrick on starting Mainoo

“I thought Kobbie was great in there alongside Casemiro. I thought they gave us a foundation, with Licha (Martinez) and Harry (Maguire), that block. I thought it gave us a really strong foundation.”

Carrick praises Man Utd players

“The boys were fantastic today in so many ways. To manage it emotionally and with the information we’ve given them, pulling it all together. It was pretty good.”

Guardiola says his players will learn from this experience

“Many players come here for the first time with a Man City shirt and need these kind of things to grow.”

Guardiola on Marc Guehi

Guardiola is asked about Man City signing Marc Guehi: “I don’t know yet officially from my club. I think you will know and I will know when they tell me. Apparently it’s close but they didn’t tell me anything about that.”

Guardiola says lack of effort not an issue

“It’s not about they don’t run or they don’t try. I know them. I know how they commit, all of them, but sometimes at 12.30 on a Saturday, one team is better than the other one. We have to accept it.”

Guardiola on Dalot's foul on Doku

Guardiola says Dalot could have been sent off for his foul on Doku but does not want to focus on that.

“If the players have excuses for that result, we will be in trouble in the future. We have to look at ourselves and today it’s simple. Man Utd were better than us and we have to accept it.

“In ten years, how many times have we been better? I lost here before but we were a little bit there. Today, we have not been.”

Pep backs his players

“We changed a lot. The keeper to the front, many, many players. And we have a lot of important absences right now.

“But the spirit has been top. Today is a day that we were not here but Sunderland was extraordinary, we’ve been in many games. The games against Brighton, Chelsea, the last game in Newcastle. But today no.”

Guardiola: The better team won

Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: “The better team won. They were better. When a team is better you have to accept it. They had the energy we didn’t have, so congratulations.”

Martinez and Mbeumo reaction

Lisandro Martinez: “One important thing Michael Carrick said is use the energy of the people.”

Bryan Mbeumo: “Like Licha said, we used the energy of the fans today.”

Full-time (2-0)

It is all over, a massive win for United and a dream start for Carrick to his stint as interim manager. It moves them closer to the Champions League places and could kickstart their season.

For City it is a borderline catastrophic result. If derby day defeat was not bad enough, it could prove damning to their title hopes. Despite their victories in the cup, they have now gone four on the bounce without a win in the league.
