Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca highlighted defence as an area of concern after his side lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield.

The Blues travelled to Merseyside on strong form, unbeaten since an August loss to Servette, but were undone by a Mohammed Salah penalty and a Curtis Jones winner. Nicolas Jackson’s second half strike was not enough to turn the tide.

Speaking at full-time, Maresca pointed out that clean sheets are a necessity in order to win matches.

He said: “We need to work for the clean sheet and many things. We can do better.”

“But to come here against this team, to not concede chances, it’s impossible. We have to be proud of defending well but a bit upset because we don’t like losing.”

He highlighted positives despite Chelsea’s shortcomings, saying that he was proud of the performance, refusing to bite when reporters asked about referee John Brooks’ controversial penalty decision.

He said: “I’m relaxed. I’m not happy because we lost but I am happy because the performance of the team.

“The decision from the referee has been clear for everyone, the referee is there to take a decision; sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong.”

Chelsea will look to return to winning ways on Thursday as they travel to Greece to take on Panathinaikos.
