Mason interested in becoming next permanent Spurs boss

Interim Spurs boss Ryan Mason says he has ‘no doubt’ that he is ready to become the next permanent manager of the club.

Mason became the interim head coach of Tottenham for the second time this week following the decision to sack another temporary boss in Cristian Stellini, who had replaced Antonio Conte in the dugout.

Former Spurs and Hull midfielder Mason also took over on a temporary basis two years ago following Jose Mourinho’s sacking, and has now thrown his hat into the ring to take the job on permanently.

“Obviously I’m ready and if that situation happens it obviously means I have done a good job,” he said.

“But that is obviously in the future of four, five, six weeks’ time. The immediate thought is the game on Thursday and the game on Sunday.

“We have big weeks before anyone in here can start to think of that situation.

“I have been coaching six years, which I think is a long time. I have spent a lot of time on grass, but, probably more importantly for me, the people I have worked with and come across have accelerated my growth as an individual.

“Of course there’s many people I trust and value their opinion in this training centre and also outside who I am always in communication with.

“You have to be ready and I am ready. I don’t doubt that. It’s just business. We’ve got a really, really big game Thursday and another one on Sunday. The focus on my behalf and the group is just to prepare for that.”

Spurs take on top four rivals Manchester United on Thursday, and Mason says he believes there will be a reaction from the embarrassing 6-1 defeat at Newcatle which led to Stellini’s departure.

“A reaction. Absolutely a reaction,” Mason responded when asked what he expects to see from his Spurs side.

“Obviously Sunday was disappointing for us and I would hope and expect there’s a reaction from not only the players but everyone in the building and everyone involved in the club as well.”
