A ‘risk’ to start Martial against Forest, Ten Hag admits

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag says it would be a risk to start forward Anthony Martial against Nottingham Forest on Sunday having only recently returned from injury.

Martial started and assisted in United’s 2-2 Europa League draw with Sevilla on Thursday, his first start since returning from a hip problem.

Ten Hag is facing several injury problems at the moment, with star man Marcus Rashford sidelined with a muscle problem and both Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane suffering injuries during Thursday’s game.

And the Man Utd boss admits he is wary of starting Martial for the second time in a week despite Rashford’s absence.

“Maybe he can but it’s a risk and we can’t take that risk in this moment because we don’t have so many options in the frontline with Rashford and Garnacho injured,” Ten Hag explained.

“So we have to be careful and also in the individual prospect we know when there’s a lot of load he gets injured.

“We have to build it and especially when the games are coming quickly after each other, when the recovery time is less. We have to take that also in mind and manage that very carefully.”

Ten Hag also added that it is too early to provide an update on the injuries to Martinez and Varane, but both Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay could return to the squad.
