‘We’ll see’ – Haaland to be assessed ahead of Liverpool game

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City striker Erling Haaland will be assessed ahead of the game against Liverpool.

Haaland has been nursing a groin injury which forced him to withdraw from the Norway squad to face Spain and Georgia over the international break.

His father and former Manchester City man, Alfie Haaland, told TV 2 Sport in Norway that his son had instead spent the break in Spain recovering from the injury.

“Manchester City has a partnership with a hospital in Barcelona so he has been there for further checks and treatment,” he said.

“Now he has been [in Marbella] for a couple of days with the physio from the club. Firstly, I’m not a doctor and secondly, I think it’s ‘touch and go’, yes. You can’t just go two weeks without training and then jump right into a fight. There must be a progression there.

“They can gamble on it, but if he doesn’t get proper training with the team, then he won’t play. It is about how he responds to treatment in the next few days. He needs a lot of care.”

And asked for an update on Haaland ahead of the game against Liverpool on Saturday, Guardiola said: “Erling is recovering, we have the last training session and we’re going to see how he feels.

“We’ll see this afternoon, the last training at 4 o’clock, we’ll see how he feels.

“At the end the doctors and especially the players will decide. I just spoke with him and he feels good, but we will see what happens.

“We’ve scored a lot of goals this season. He has scored an amount of incredible goals but in the past we always scored a lot of goals. We are a team since we are here.

“I had a feeling under Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini, always Man City were a team who scored a lot of goals during the season.”

Phil Foden will not be available for the game having had an appendix operation over the international break and is set to miss the next two to three weeks.
