Koulibaly out for ‘weeks not days’ with hamstring issue

Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly is set to miss a number of weeks after suffering a hamstring injury.

The centre-back was replaced in the Blues’ 2-0 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid after suffering the problem.

And interim boss Frank Lampard says he will miss at least the next two games – Saturday’s Premier League clash with Brighton and the return leg with Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

“No, he won’t be available for either game. It is a hamstring injury. He won’t be ready for weeks rather than days,” he said.

“He’s a very good, very experienced player.

“We haven’t got lots of cover at certain times, obviously the Champions League squad is different to the Premier League squad.

“Of course, it’s a disappointment for him and for us but there’s an opportunity and we carry on without him. Hopefully he gets fit as quick as he can.”

Lampard has lost his first two games in temporary charge of the club, a defeat at Wolves before their Champions League loss in Madrid.

The Blues have struggled for goals this season, scoring only 29 goals in 30 Premier League games.

“It’s not been a bigger problem (than I thought),” Lampard continued.

“I understood it before I came. Trying to address it is our job of course.

“There’s been a lot of talk about belief, I’ve said that word myself a lot in the past two press conferences, but the reality is it’s work and to replicate it on the training pitch, and to have enough urgency in our attacking game that we have numbers in and around the box and know how we want to attack.”
