Lack of focus not an issue for Onana, ten Hag insists

Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag refused to blame goalkeeper Andre Onana after Manchester United let a two-goal lead slip to draw 3-3 with Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay had put United 3-1 up but the Turkish side fought back to draw 3-3 thanks to Hakim Ziyech’s double and an excellent strike from substitute Kerem Aktürkoğlu.

Onana twice conceded from free-kicks taken by Ziyech, including a big blunder for the second which saw him handle the ball into his own net.

But the United boss insists the result was a team issue and not the fault of individuals.

“It’s not about an individual,” ten Hag said.

“Of course some individual errors can make a difference and we have to take responsibility for it but it’s always about the team.

“All the players in the squad are good and deserve to play for Man United because they are brilliant players and that counts for the whole squad.”

And asked whether a lack of focus was an issue for Onana, ten Hag added: “It’s difficult to make that connection and to see that as a cause.

“It’s the brilliance of Hakim (Ziyech), the first free-kick. He’s scored so many goals against the best goalkeepers in the world in this way.”
