Shocking stat highlights Chelsea’s shortcomings despite huge spending

Chelsea’s spending on transfer fees contributed to just one point per €15.6m spent this past season, according to research from SafeBettingSites.

Under a new ownership group comprised of American businessman Todd Boehly, private equity group Clearlake Capital and others, the Blues have spent more than £600m on new signings.

This included a Premier League record £106.8m transfer fee spent on midfielder Enzo Fernandez, as well as £75m on defender Wesley Fofana, £88.5m on Mykhailo Mudryk and more than £60m on Marc Cucurella.

But the significant spending failed to translate to performances on the pitch, with Chelsea finishing 12th in the Premier League in a season which saw four different managers take charge of the club – Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Bruno Saltor and then Frank Lampard.

A SafeBettingSites.com report claims Chelsea’s spending has worked out at a huge €15.6m spent for each point the club won this season, which one of the site’s pundits Edith Reads says lays bare the shortcomings under the club’s new ownership group.

“The lack of continuity and chemistry on the pitch has been evident for all to see,” she said.

“The Blues lacked consistency and couldn’t find a winning formula throughout the season. The team’s 2022/23 campaign is a textbook example of how not to run a football club.”

Chelsea confirmed the appointment of former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino this week, who has signed an initial two-year deal with the club.

According to reports, Pochettino could be set to lose England international Mason Mount with the Telegraph reporting that he has agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

Mount could lead a number of players heading for the exit door at the club this summer, with the Blues said to be under pressure to get rid of players in order to ease concerns over financial fair play regulations.

However, the squad still remains short in key areas with further incomings likely required if Pochettino is to improve results.

According to the Daily Mail, Pochettino wants to sign a new goalkeeper, midfielder and striker in the transfer window as he seeks to get Chelsea back on the right track.

He is said to be keen on Sporting midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who is also reported to have an offer on the table from French giants PSG.
