De Gea showing he is ‘so consistent’ – Ten Hag

Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag

Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag heaped praise on goalkeeper David de Gea and backed him to earn a recall to the Spanish national team after beating Real Betis.

De Gea has not played for Spain since October 2020, and has not been included in a squad since November 2021.

But after keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Betis, helping his side to comfortably progress to the quarter finals of the Europa League, Ten Hag was full of praise on his goalkeeper when asked whether he should be recalled to the Spain squad.

“You can see that his performances for Manchester United are brilliant over years,” Ten Hag said.

“He has the most clean sheets, so he wins a record over Peter Schmeicel, and when you win a record over Peter Schmeicel, you have to be very, very good.

“He’s showing he is so consistent. So as a manager, you can always rely on him. We have seen it today as well.

“But I think he’s working on a very good season, but for the rest, it’s up to the manager of Spain if he selects him or not.”

United are now waiting to hear their opponents in the last eight of the competition, with Marcus Rashford scoring the only goal of the game against Betis to give his side a 5-1 aggregate victory against the Spanish side.

“Very pleased, you know the start can be difficult because they’re going to have a try to get a quick 1-0, so not allowing them the first goal is important,” Ten Hag added.

“I think that’s what we did. First half we had some opportunities but also we allowed them to get some counter attacks, so we had to be a little bit more calm on the ball.

“Second half was better, we scored the first goal and it gave us the result.”
