Live updates from reporter James St Denis at St James’ Park as Newcastle United host Chelsea in the Premier League.
“For sure, in the first half there are things we can do better. But the way they showed in the second half, character, togetherness, they have to feel proud. Because you know better than me, you are from here, 2-0 down against Newcastle away in this stadium, this noise, this environment is not easy. Not many teams can do that and they have done.”
Enzo Maresca on Reece James: “It was, once again, a top performance. He played for one hour as a midfielder and then the last half an hour as a full-back in his position. Again, he’s doing a fantastic job, not only for the goal, in general, and we are happy for him.”
Chelsea goalscorer Joao Pedro speaking to BBC Sport: “We knew it would be a tough game. We played better than them in the second half, we scored twice and we could have scored more goals. We got a point and we have to move forward. We didn’t start well in the first half and we conceded two goals very quickly. They play with the fans and we know it is difficult.”
Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade speaking to TNT Sports after scoring two goals this afternoon: “We played an amazing first half with great energy and pressed really well. But in the second half, we still did quiet well but it’s unlucky we conceded two goals in two situations from which we normally don’t concede.
“If you saw how we played in the first half, we can win against every team, I don’t know why we conceded two goals. It happened. We’ll keep working on it and maybe next time, we can play 90 minutes like that.”
Full time at St James’ Park and what a wild, chaotic match.
Newcastle went 2-0 up in the first half thanks to a Nick Voltemade brace, but Chelsea rallied and scored twice after half time via Reece James and Joao Pedro.
A point apiece and that’s probably the fairest result.
