Live updates from St James’ Park as Newcastle host Athletic Club in the Champions League.
Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon’s injury which forced him off in the first half: “It seems like a re-occurrence of his hip injury that’s been plaguing him in recent weeks.”
The Newcastle boss speaking to TNT Sports: “Really pleased with today. It was an important response to West Ham. We had a quick turnaround for this game. I don’t think it was us at our best but we’re in a good position now in this competition.
“We learn a lot. This format is really good, more games but it’s a bigger test when you return to the Premier League. It’s been good to have a game off the back of West Ham, we’ve put that away and we scored two goals.”
Bruno Guimaraes says it was not easy playing with illness tonight: “For me, it was like something was holding me with 10kg on my back. For this club, I will do everything. I started feeling ill the day before we played West Ham.”
Dan Burn speaking to TNT Sports after the game about his goal: “I’ve been due one for a while, and then when it came in, I decided I would head it as hard as I could. We’ve been working on it. We knew I’d have some space around the back. At least it was a good header.”
The referee’s whistle draws the curtain on Newcastle’s third win in the Champions League this season. A tale of two headers, courtesy of Dan Burn and Joelinton in either half were enough for Newcastle to comfortably win against Athletic Bilbao. The visitors offered little to cheer for for the visiting fans, who were out in full force up in the heavens at St. James’ Park. Newcastle climb up to sixth in the Champions League table and it’s three wins out of four in the Champions League. Stay tuned for manager reactions here.
We will have five minutes stoppage time to round out this evening’s fixture.
Serrano sees his shot saved and Bilbao will now have a corner.
It would not be unfair to say that Athletic Bilbao haven’t offered much this evening, in what is playing out to be a very comfortable win for Newcastle. If they see out this win, they will have taken nine points from a possible 12, a very respectable record.

Newcastle seem very content to keep the ball in their half and play around Bilbao. They are already two goals to the good and look set to bring home the three points, with anything more a bonus on an already impressive performance.
Areso is booked.
Navarro OFF Serrano ON
Jauregizar OFF Sanchez ON
Dan Burn OFF Lewis Hall ON
Bruno Guimaraes OFF Lewis Miley ON
Harvey Barnes OFF Anthony Elanga ON
Paredes wins a free kick in the defensive half.
Guimaraes wins a free kick in the defensive half.
The Athletic Bilbao defender is booked for holding back Newcastle’s Woltemade.
Dan Burn sees his shot go just wide as he finds himself unmarked and onside in the Bilbao box.
Botman meets Dan Burn’s header but Simón makes light work of it and catches the Dutchman’s effort.
Trippier to take. Newcastle are going for a third!
Well that might just be the easiest goal Joelinton will ever score! Harvey Barnes’ looping ball into the box serves it up on a plate for the Brazilian who heads home from close range, leaving Simón only able to see the ball nestle in the back of his net. Newcastle two to the good!
Gómez drags his shot wide for the visitors.
Newcastle get the second half underway.
The referee’s whistle signals half time here at St. James’ Park. Dan Burn’s early header sees Newcastle sitting in the driving seat so far this evening, though Bilbao came close to equalising when Boiro hit the post in the 19th minute. The remainder of the first half was all Newcastle, who looked like the more likely team to score. The visitors survive the first half and find themselves only one goal down, with all to play for in the second half. Stay tuned and bring it on!
