Live updates from the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final between Newcastle United and Man City.
Eddie Howe says being down to ten men when City scored their goal was a big part of why they conceded.
“They need to look at that rule because Jacob (Ramsey) has gone off with an elbow to the head.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on conceding a second goal: “It’s a blow for us but not fatal. We’re still fighting.
“It’s a bit of naivety with one minute to go.
“I think the lads gave everything today in difficult circumstances after extra time on Saturday.”
“What a game from Max (Alleyne) and Khusanov. They are so good
“It was a good decision to bring Max back! Thanks so much again to Watford and Javi Gracia, they did an amazing job.”
Guardiola says he cannot understand why VAR didn’t intervene in their previous game against Newcastle when his side should have had two penalties, but did today to rule out Semenyo’s goal.
“I’ll say it today because we won. I didn’t say anything last time.”
Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: “Really good. We carried a team spirit. The first step to reach the final.”
He says Semenyo and Haaland “were not completely connected” in the first half but were “much better” in the second half.
Antoine Semenyo speaking to Sky Sports about his excellent start to life at Man City: “We knew we’d get chances and I was just in the right area to tap it in.
“I think the whole environment here is perfect, everybody’s confident. They’ve made me feel welcome.
“I’m definitely picking things up very quickly.”
Stay tuned here for all the post-match reaction from both managers.
The referee blows the final whistle and draws the curtain on an action-packed affair. Newcastle will travel to Manchester in three weeks’ time with a mountain to climb, as goals courtesy of Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki sealed the win for Pep Guardiola’s side, giving the visitors one foot in the Carabao Cup final.
And that could be the nail in the coffin for Newcastle! Cherki is unmarked in the penalty area and slots home City’s second to cap off a mesmerising team move from City. Pep Guardiola will be absolutely delighted with his side having doubled their advantage.
City will be in no rush to take this one, they’re nearly home and dry.
Tonali to take. It’s now or never for the Magpies.
Pep Guardiola is booked for his sideline antics.
We will have nine added minutes to end the game here. Will it be more late drama for Newcastle at St. James’ Park?
Trippier is shown a yellow card for a foul on Semenyo.
OFF: Aké
ON: Ait-Nouri
OFF: Guimaraes
ON: Trippier
Rico Lewis is shown a yellow card for time wasting.
We’ve seen an entirely different side to City this second half. They’re offering Newcastle no chance of possession, and appear extremely assured on the ball. If the result stays as it is, Pep Guardiola will be very happy with his side’s second half showing.
OFF: Doku
ON: Cherki
Guimaraes is shown a yellow card for his challenge on Doku.
Newcastle with a free kick just outside the City penalty area following Haaland’s mistaken handball. Hall to take.
Bernardo Silva is shown a yellow card.
Lewis wins a free kick in the offensive half.
What an introduction that would have been! Sandro Tonali picks up the ball at the edge of the penalty area and drives one hard and low goalward. His shot goes just wide, but St. James’ Park is alive and kicking after that one!
OFF: Wissa, Ramsey, Gordon
ON: Woltemade, Tonali, Elanga
