Live updates as Newcastle take on Man Utd at St James’ Park.
Michael Carrick has just spoken to the media following his first defeat as Manchester United manager. Here are the best quotes:
On the defeat: “We’ve put ourselves in a decent position, but tonight hurts.”
On his emotions: “It hurts me a lot.”
On the performance: “We’ve lost a game of football, it just didn’t happen for us tonight.”
On the red card and penalty: “I don’t have a view on either of those moments… I’m interested in what we can do better.”
On the bigger picture: “We can’t lose sight of the position we’ve put ourselves in.”
On what’s next: “There’s a lot to play for.”
Eddie Howe has just spoken to the media following his side’s victory. Here are the best quotes:
On the result: “Massive win for us. We needed it and we know we needed it.”
On the recent run: “We’ve found a way to lose games when we shouldn’t have done.”
On the feeling at full-time: “One of the best emotions I’ve felt.”
On Osula’s run: “He had one moment to show his legs, and he did the rest.”
On Osula in training: “Will wanted ten more finishes [like his goal] in training yesterday. He scored eight out of ten.”
On the team’s character: “We’ve got players that have run through brick walls for this club and I can’t praise them enough.”
On the red card: “I thought it was very iffy in my opinion… and to ruin [the game] in the way he did, I thought it was a poor decision.”
On the fixture: “It’s one of the great fixtures in English football.”
On Trippier: “Vintage Kieran… I thought he was magnificent for us today.”
On Osula’s speed: “He is a player that plays so fast.”
On Joelinton: “When he plays like that he’s almost like two players… he’s an incredible player.”
And Will Osula has won in for the 10-man Newcastle. St. James’ Park is in bedlam! What a performance from the hosts, who have been without Jacob Ramsey and the eleventh man for over half of the affair. They’ve been the better side this evening, and are deserved winners here at St. James’ Park. Michael Carrick tastes defeat for the first time as Manchester United manager. But one man’s loss is another man’s gain, and that’s such an important win for Eddie Howe and his side. Stay tuned for all the reaction from both managers here.
OFF: Tonali
ON: Botman
Newcastle win a free kick in their own penalty area…there’s seconds to go here. Newcastle are nearly home and dry.
Newcastle are less than two minutes away from handing Michael Carrick his first defeat as Manchester United manager. St. James’ Park is rocking!
WILL OSULA stand and deliver! The forward has just sent St. James’ Park into pandemonium. It’s all Osula’s making, as he sprints the full length of the pitch to keep the ball in play, cuts inside past the Manchester United defenders and bends one into the side netting, giving Lammens no chance! What a moment!
Zirkzee fires a terrific swerving effort from outside the box, but Ramsdale reacts quickly and tips it over for a United corner.
OFF: Mazraoui
ON: Malacia
OFF: Gordon, Elanga
ON: Osula, Murphy
Trippier is booked for bringing down Cunha and halting the United counter-attack.
Willock does well to win a free kick for Newcastle in a dangerous area. Dalot the culprit.
OFF: Mainoo, Mbeumo
ON: Amad, Zirkzee
What a save that is from Aaron Ramsdale! Fernandes lifts one into the penalty area to the unmarked Yoro, who only has to head home from close range. Ramsdale is quick to react, though, and parries away Yoro’s close-range header.
Bruno Fernandes to deliver.
Gordon breaks away from Mainoo and finds himself unmarked to meet the corner at the far post. The Englishman meets the delivery a tad late, however, and pokes it just wide.
Mazraoui is shown a yellow card for his challenge on Elanga.
Elanga wins a free kick inches outside the penalty area for Newcastle.
Willock wins a corner for Newcastle, who admittedly do not look like they’re playing with a man less right now.
Joelinton wins a free kick in the offensive half.
Gordon shoots low and hard from outside of the box but it’s a comfortable save for Lammens.
OFF: Barnes
ON: Willock
We’re back underway here at St. James’ Park.
Wow. That’s some finish to the first half. Two goals, one red card and a crazy ten minutes of stoppage time to end the first half. Newcastle will feel very unlucky to have gone down to ten men, and it’s all to play for here at St. James’ Park.
And it’s more drama in first-half stoppage time! Bruno Fernandes’ free kick on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area is met perfectly by Casemiro, who heads home to restore parity! What a crazy ten minutes!
