Live updates from St James’ Park as Newcastle host Tottenham in the Premier League.
“The perfect bicycle-kick” Thomas Frank praises Cristian Romero as Spurs captain scores late equaliser at St. James’ Park.
Thomas Frank was full of praise for Spurs skipper Cristian Romero following the Argentine’s 95th minute overhead kick to rescue Tottenham a point at St. James’ Park.
“Let’s start by praising Cuti, overall it was a top performance defending on the ball.” Frank said, “and then getting up there and scoring two goals. I think the bicycle-kick will get more praise, but I think the header is more exceptional. The way he does that is better than many strikers.”
Romero drew Spurs level in the 78th minute with a diving header that sent the visiting fans into raptures, though their delight was soon cut short when Anthony Gordon converted from the spot to restore Newcastle’s lead eight minutes later following a lengthy VAR check.
On the penalty decision, which adjudged Rodrigo Bentancur to have dragged Dan Burn down in the box, Frank said: “For me it’s never a penalty, even speaking to some people from Newcastle they don’t think it’s a penalty. We need consistency. I actually think the referee nailed his call on the pitch.”
“But I want to speak about us, and the mentality to come back and the mentality away from home. I’m happy with that.”
On the travelling fans, Frank said: “It’s a difficult place to come as an away fan and be loud enough for us to hear them. They put so much effort into it and matched the effort from the team. That togetherness drove us forward and it gave us a more than well deserved point.”
Thomas Frank’s tenure at Tottenham has been consistently inconsistent, with each impressive performance seemingly complemented by a noticeably lacklustre one. On the team’s recent struggles, Frank spoke of Romero’s individual heroism: “We can set everything up tactically well and set up our principles and that’s the foundation to hopefully make a great team. But sometimes it’s decisive actions from key players and Cuti definitely did that today.”
“I really like the character and mentality of the team after three tough games. To go down twice and come back twice shows everything about the willingness and mentality. If you’re in a tough run there’s only one way out of it; that is to work hard and keep going and the team did that very well today.”
Well that’s an end that Newcastle have become all too familiar with this season, conceding a last minute equaliser. A cagey first half which saw Joelinton hit the post ended all square with neither side able to open the scoring. The introduction of Bruno Guimaraes at half time lit a fire under the hosts and the Brazilian stepped up to open the scoring in the 71st minute and send St. James’ Park into raptures. It became a tale of captain versus captain, as Cristian Romero popped up with a header to restore parity not ten minutes later. Following a lengthy VAR check, Anthony Gordon restored Newcastle’s lead from the spot with Newcastle so close to picking up the win. The 95th minute brought even more drama as Cristian Romero put himself into contention for goal of the season as the defender sent the visiting fans into pandemonium, scoring from a bicycle-kick following a corner. It finished 2-2 here in the North East, stay tuned for all the post-match reaction here.
Full time Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham.
Porro to take.
Cristian Romero take a bow! We might have just seen one of the goals of the season there. The Spurs captain meets the parried corner perfectly and bicycle-kicks it past Ramsdale and into the Newcastle net! You don’t see that from a defender every day! Parity restored. There’s still time for a winner here!
Tel to deliver.
Miley OFF Schar ON
Porro to take.
We’ll have nine minutes to see out the game here. There’s still time for things to change at St. James’ Park!
Sarr OFF Gray ON
Kudus OFF Odobert ON
And Gordon restores Newcastle’s lead from the spot! St. James’ Park has been sent into raptures! Bentancur will rue the day he brought down Dan Burn in the box, and Gordon has made Spurs pay. Advantage Newcastle once more!
Well that’s a silly decision from Bentancur, and it might cost his side the three points here. It looks as though Gordon will be the one to take and attempt to restore Newcastle’s lead.
The referee is checking the monitor for a potential foul on Dan Burn in the penalty area during the Newcastle corner. Bentancur has brought down Dan Burn in the box and the referee is about to announce his decision.
Guimaraes to take.
What a header that is from Romero! Kudus whips in a great ball and Romero shows great initiative to get down low past Dan Burn and head home past Ramsdale! The away end has been sent into raptures. Parity restored with just over ten minutes to go. Game on!
Kudus to take.
Kolo Muani OFF Richarlison ON
Johnson OFF Tel ON
Bergvall OFF Simons ON
Spurs finally manage to get the ball out of play and a triple change follows.
Bruno Guimaraes, stand and deliver! The Brazilian has just taken the roof off St. James’ Park. Anthony Gordon does incredibly well to get away from Udogie on the left-flank with a great burst of pace before laying it off to Woltemade, who tees up Guimaraes perfectly. The Brazilian hits it first time and fires it into the bottom right corner to give the hosts the lead! Advantage Newcastle!
Lewis Miley to take.
Murphy OFF Elanga ON
Barnes OFF Gordon ON
That’s a great save from Vicario! Livramento catches the rebounded corner really well and drills it low and hard, but Vicario does well to get down and parry it away among a flurry of Newcastle and Spurs players alike.
Now it’s Newcastle’s turn to attack! Guimaraes set to deliver.
Another corner to Spurs on the opposite side. Kudus to deliver.
Porro to take.
Spurs are enjoying a spell of possession and dominance here, they have done well to settle down following a shaky period that came shortly after the restart.
