Live updates from Raff Tindale at St James’ Park as Newcastle face Crystal Palace.
Oliver Glasner says his Crystal Palace side’s set-piece defending has not been good enough, speaking to Sky Sports. “It was a good performance but in the last four defeats we lost three just from set pieces,” he said. “It’s not acceptable and I have to find solutions to support the players better. We can’t afford to give so many goals away from set pieces. it’s the reason we lost today.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports after securing back-to-back wins: “It’s a better position but we’ve got more work to do. We’ve got a massive month ahead. We need to build some momentum and confidence and today is a big step forward.”
The referee’s whistle signals the end of the game and draws the curtain on a comfortable afternoon for Newcastle at St. James’ Park. The hosts had the ball in the net twice in either half, though both in the first were deemed offside. Palace offered very little, and Bruno Guimaraes and Malick Thiaw sent Newcastle on their way to the three points. Palace remain winless in the league for five straight games, while Newcastle get 2026 off to a winning start. Stay tuned here for the post-match reactions from both managers.
Joe Willock’s eyes will have lit up at that chance. Barnes gets away from the Palace defence and fires a shot across goal. Henderson does well to save, but the follow-up is met by Willock, who looked destined to score. Inexplicably, though, he fires wide and misses the sitter!
We’ll have five minutes added time to end the affair here at St. James’ Park.
Murphy OFF Willock ON
Mateta OFF Drakes-Thomas ON
Wharton OFF Rodney ON
Pino OFF Esse ON
It looks as though Glasner’s side have accepted they’ll be leaving the north east empty handed this afternoon, it’s been all Newcastle since the hosts’ second goal.
Wharton to take.
Well that’ll surely send Newcastle on their way! Malick Thiaw, in the midst of a flurry of bodies, pokes the ball home from the corner to double Newcastle’s lead. Palace have a mountain to climb if they’re to get back into this one.
Wissa OFF Woltemade ON
Dean Henderson has just kept his side in it there! Barnes soars above all and heads toward the bottom corner, but Henderson does well to get down quickly and parry it out for a corner.
Miley to take.
Johnson OFF Uche ON
Bruno Guimaraes STAND AND DELIVER! This game was calling out for a captain’s contribution. Miley meets Barnes’ cross and plays it back into the 6-yard box, where Guimaraes meets it to head home! The Brazilian wheels away in celebration, as he should. Advantage Newcastle!
Wharton fouls Guimaraes on the edge of the Palace penalty area. This is a really good opportunity for the hosts to either have a shot on goal or deliver one into the box.
Eddie Howe surely has to be thinking of bringing on Nick Woltemade here. His towering presence would surely be felt against a tiring Palace side.
A good counter-attack from Palace there. Wharton wins the ball in midifeld and steamrolls forward and plays it to Johnson, who slips as he is taking his shot and Pope saves comfortably.
Gordon OFF Barnes ON
Hall OFF Livramento ON
Tonali OFF Ramsey ON
Newcastle fans are really not happy with that decision, as Anthony Gordon. He goes sliding in and appears to win the ball, although the referee thought otherwise.
Wharton is down on the grass here as he seems to be in some discomfort.
Guehi is booked for his reckless challenge on Tonali.
Guehi goes sliding into Tonali and is pulled up for a foul.
Henderson parries out Miley’s corner for another, this time on the other side. Hall to take.
Clyne OFF Devenny ON
