Gareth Southgate’s England future is uncertain after his side’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
The England manager would not be drawn on his future after the loss, insisting he will take time to make his decision after holding conversations with relevant people.
But with Southgate’s current contract expiring at the end of this year, here are the current favorites to replace him according to the odds…
Graham Potter 6/5
The former Chelsea manager is currently the clear favourite to replace Southgate. Potter has been out of work since being sacked by the Blues in April 2023 but is being backed by many as the man to take over with England.
Potter won plaudits for the job he did at Brighton prior to taking over at Chelsea and his possession style of football could be appealing to those who will make the decision.
Eddie Howe 7/2
Howe has impressed at Newcastle United, taking the club back into the Champions League by finishing fourth in the Premier League in the 2022/23 campaign. He failed to repeat that feat last season but has an impressive managerial record and is unsurprisingly high on the list of favourites to take over from Southgate.
Lee Carsley 5/1
The current England Under-21s boss would follow the same path as Southgate if he takes over the senior side. The 50-year-old has an excellent track record in youth development and won the U21 Euros with England in 2023.
Thomas Tuchel 8/1
Currently out of work after leaving Bayern Munich, the German has won trophies wherever he has been and is renowned as a knockout tournament specialist. Could he be the man to finally take England over the finish line and win silverware?
Mauricio Pochettino 8/1
The Argentinian left Chelsea at the end of last season following a mixed spell at the club but enjoyed a strong end to the season which saw the club finish sixth in the Premier League. He has worked in England for much of his managerial career and could be tempted by the national team job.
Jurgen Klopp 10/1
It would be a surprise to see the Liverpool legend return to management so soon after announcing he would take an extended break from working but would me a massive coup for England if they could persuade him to take the job.
