‘Not good’ – Erik ten Hag says attacking players must improve

Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag vowed that his Manchester United side will improve after scraping past Wolves in their opening game of the Premier League season.

Raphael Varane’s late winner secured a 1-0 victory over Gary O’Neil’s side, who spurned several big opportunities to score during the game.

And ten Hag admits his team must be better if they are to improve on last season’s third-placed finish, especially when it comes to his attacking players keeping hold of the ball.

“Especially on the ball, we can be much better, much more calm,” United boss ten Hag explained.

“We gave too many easy giveaways, especially our front players, that was not good. But you have to get into the season and we will improve.

“When you give easy giveaways, then they have the opportunity to counter.

“But I think we matched the runs. We dealt with it and got a clean sheet, that tells everything.

“We have a win at Old Trafford, we have a clean sheet which is good. We were organised, now we have to be better on the ball.”

Wolves were denied a late penalty for a challenge by Andre Onana, but the United boss believes it was the right call.

“It’s difficult, the ball came in and I think it was really brave to come out,” he said.

“The ball was touched before Andre dived in so I don’t think he had an influence on that touch from the opponent.”
