Pochettino: I want to build a genuine relationship with the fans

Mauricio Pochettino says he has not come to Chelsea to be a populist and he will need to start winning more games to build a relationship with the fans.

Pochettino also said he is aware that some Chelsea fans might be bothered by his previous managerial spell at Tottenham, and that will make building a genuine relationship will take time and effort.

The Argentine does not intend to be a populist at Chelsea and believes the only way to win over the fans is by being competitive and turning over results.

The Argentine also leaned on his reputation for developing young players and said it was one of the main reasons he arrived at the club.

When asked if it was time for Chelsea fans to forget about his previous ties to Spurs, Pochettino said: “Your question I like, it’s normal. I came from a different club, so this is normal.

“I arrived in Chelsea with a much different project. I came here with my reputation to work on a project that is to build a team with young players, talented players.

“Of course, for us, we knew this would be a massive challenge. It’s a challenge to build the team and to win games, to be competitive and to take risks with the fans.

“But, I’m not going to be a populist. I always said from the beginning, I want to build a genuine relationship, not to kiss the badge or do stupid things on the touchline to win over the fans.

“What I want is to provide the team with tools to win games. To do that, we need to build a very good relationship. I’m not here to be a populist and say, ‘I love the fans’, because I know it takes time to build these relationships.”
